silences in red - Lillian Hellman Character Study
Fiction - Interview/Short Scene
Written November 2006
A short "interview"-style character study I did to get down Lillian's dialogue rhythm. Also, it gave me an excuse to learn more about the real-life Lillian Hellman (I'm... rather obsessed with historical accuracy in my plays, despite the fact that all of them tend to veer towards the fantastical in the end).

silences in red - Draft One Excerpt
Fiction - Short Scene
Written November 2006
This is the first piece I ever wrote for what would become silences in red. There's a lot here that's sadly not in the play anymore, but I liked the dialogue enough to put it up as a seperate piece so that it doesn't get lost in the mess of previous drafts.

"Hidden" Scenes: The Empress
Fiction - Short Scene
Written October 2006
Some of the character studies I do involve writing excerpts of previous conversations -- "backstories through language". I came up with this piece (a pseudo-backstory to Hester Greenwood, the character I was playing in Kevin Mullins' The Empress) during a playwriting class, while listening to a lecture on form and composition.

Polished Version: "Bloody Lane"
Historical Fiction - Monologue
Written May 2006
Written as part of "Word Play," a class that used current events as the inspiration for monologues and plays. The final version of the monologue I began in the freewrite below. Unfortunately a lot more "social change"-ish than I'd have liked, but such is Hampshire.

Freewrite: Civil War Photography
Historical Fiction - Monologue
Written May 2006
Written as part of "Word Play," a class that used current events as the inspiration for monologues and plays. A two page freewrite done in ten minutes to come up with inspirations for our final piece in the class. Some good stuff, some terrible.

Have a Heart
Fiction - Monologue
Written May 2006
Written as part of "Word Play," a class that used current events as the inspiration for monologues and plays. A self-contained monologue about an AMR biller's daughter.

Fixed
Historical Fiction - Short Story
Written May 2006
A story about Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan, two Civil War photographers working for Mathew Brady, during and after the battle of Antietam. One of my better historical fiction pieces.

The Epic Tale of the Lady and the Mage
Fiction - Short Story
Written December 2005
Written as a final project for a philosophy class, based off two characters I had invented two years prior. Though some knowledge of philosophy is helpful when reading this, it easily stands on its own and it's (in my opinion) a pretty fun read.

To Testify Under Fear
Non-fiction - Essay
Written December 2006
Written as the final essay for my McCarthyism class. As it was what I was obsessed with at the time, I wrote about the HUAC trials and their effects on various members of the community (Lillian Hellman and Elia Kazan, specifically). Whether or not you read the paper, I recommend my source list if you're at all interested in the trials -- I found some great books and even better websites with tons of information on them.

Stanislavsky, Brecht, Grotowski, and Bogart - An Examination of Directors of the last Century
Non-fiction - Essay
Written November 2005
The final paper for my Directing I class. I'm putting it up because it's a fairly comprehensive overview of these four directors, to anyone who's interested but hasn't had the time to fully research them or their books.
